A Rainy Day in New York (2019):

Woody Allen wrote and directed this romantic comedy which sat on the shelf for more than a year without a theatrical release because of a huge controversy that shadowed the film. Starring Elle Fanning and Timothee Chalamet, it’s the story of a young couple named Ashleigh (Fanning) and Gatsby (Chalamet) who meet in New York City for a delightful bout of fun, but find that the constant, heavy rainfall takes all the usual places to go off the list. In the whimsical fashion of Woody’s movies in earlier days before the world closed in on him for his apparent behaviour issues, a series of adventures and misadventures ensue, making this a delightful romp through the Big Apple. Just prior to the movie’s release, both Chalamet and Fanning made public statements about not accepting their salaries for their work in the film because of their director’s misdeeds, in the “hashtag me too” era that was at its peak during this time. Its long-awaited release for Woody Allen fans has finally come. Rated 14A.

I Met a Girl (2020):

Brendon Thwaites (“Pirates of the Caribbean”) and Lily Sullivan, both Australian actors in this film made Down Under, are Devon and Lucy respectively. He lives with his brother and his brother’s wife – they are his caregivers of a sort, as Devon has schizophrenia. When the wife announces her pregnancy, it seems prudent that they ask Devon to move out. Devon is an aspiring musician who hasn’t yet found his groove, and on his own, he appears to be circling the drain, until he meets Lucy. She fits his personality, and even his mental condition, perfectly. Devon arranges to have her meet his brother, but Lucy is a no-show. He goes, with his brother, to what he believes to be her apartment, but it is completely empty, and the brother thinks that she is just a delusion. Devon doesn’t think so, and based on one clue, he makes a journey across the continent to find her. A romantic drama with a 14A rating.

Spontaneous (2020):

This BC-filmed comedy-fantasy was shot in Vancouver and in Maple Ridge and has an unusual spin on just another day at high school. Australian actress Katherine Langford is Mara, and Charlie Plummer (“Boardwalk Empire”) is Dylan, a pair of students in their senior year, dealing with all the kinds of issues that such people face, when students around them start blowing up. Blowing up, literally, as in exploding. Who will be next? Will it be Dylan? Will it be Mara, or will it be someone that they either cherish or despise? What transpires is a tale that helps each of them realize what’s really important now that they know their next moment could be their last. An amusing tale, rated 14A.

Enola Holmes (2020):

Netflix acquired the distribution rights for this whodunnit after it was decided to stream the movie rather than put it in theatres.  It's a Sherlock Holmes story, but unlike any that have come before.  Enola (Millie Bobby Brown who played "Eleven" on ``Stranger Things") is a much younger sister to Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes, but she has the detective genetics that it takes to go looking for a mystery to be solved.  None of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle books mention a younger sister, but here she is, and when her mother goes missing, Enola sets off to find her.  Helena Bonham Carter plays Mother Holmes, and Henry Cavill is Sherlock.  When it's discovered that mother is missing, and that there are a number of gifts and trinkets that she has inexplicably left behind, big brother Sherlock continues to insist that Enola leave the matter alone, and head off to boarding school.  Not her ... soon she is searching all of London, looking for clues.  A crime-adventure, rated 14A. 

Country-ish (2020)(TV series):

This Netflix original is a reality series that features country singer and internet star Coffey Anderson and his wife Criscilla.  It walks through their daily lives with the couple, and focuses on their careers - she's a hip-hop artist - their Christian faith, and their desire to provide wholesome entertainment in a world that seems to want things a lot more raunchy.  A former U.S. Marine, and an active participant in the Nashville music scene, Coffey has released nine albums so far, about half of them faith-based and the other half mainstream.  He was a contestant on season 2 of American Idol in 2003 where he made it as far as the Hollywood round.  Rated PG.

Pets United (2020):

A perfect animated film for youngsters, parents, and grandparents, but only if they watch with the kids. The central characters are all pets of one sort or another, and their common thread is that they are spoiled, they are selfish, and they live a life of luxury, because their owners have all the mechanical denizens of Robo City doing the hard work.  But what happens when the robots run amuck and the humans have to flee?  Time for the skate-boarding pug, the self-aggrandizing Siamese, a pet pig, and a smart fox to grow up and take some responsibility.  Good fun for kids of all ages - meaning, much past 13, they will probably think it's lame, but younger ones will relish it.  Rated G.
