  • Nightcrawler:

Jake Gyllenhaal is exceptional in this dark, bleak tale of guy named Louis Bloom, small time con man living on the margins of society in Los Angeles, who  comes across a serious accident, and watches the first responders, along with a freelance TV cameraman attending the event.  He learns that the video shooter sells his footage to TV stations, and soon Louis is in the game, and he’s not above getting to the scene first, and making it more photogenic by rearranging the accident scene or the crime scene to fit his frame.  Rene Russo is a desperate TV news director who buys his stuff even though she suspects it is an ill-gotten gain.  Rated 18A

  • Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible,
    No Good, Very Bad Day:

Despite the unwieldy title and the source material which is a very short children’s book, this is a delightfully charming story of a young boy named Alexander, who wishes that his family, who seem to have everything going for them, could, just once, have the kind of day he’s having.  By accident or design, soon his big brother, his sister, his mom and his dad are all embroiled in all manner of troubles that stretch the imagination.  Steve Carrell is great as the dad, Jennifer Garner is the mom, and young Ed Oxenbould is the Alexander of the title.  Great family movie … or great for anyone for that matter. Rated PG.

  • Predestination:

Ethan Hawke is The Barkeep, actually a temporal agent from the future who has been travelling through time doing police work focused on illegal time travel.  He has an opportunity now, if he can catch the one fugitive who has eluded him for centuries, to live forever, and to keep his time-travelling job forever.  Sci-fi aficionados will love the attention to detail here, in this tale based on the Robert Heinlein story, “All You Zombies.”  Shot in Australia, it also stars Christopher Kirby (the Matrix).  Rated 14A.

  • Blood Lake: the Attack of the Killer Lampreys (2014):

Shannen Doherty, once a reasonable star in her 90210 years, is relegated to this very low-end horror thriller about starving lampreys who work their way through the entire fish population in a small lake resort, and shift their attention to the swimmers and beachgoers first, and then the plumbing … watch that toilet!!  Christopher Lloyd (Taxi, Back to the Future) also stars in this so-bad-it’s-good thriller. Rated 14A.

    Mercenaries (2014):

Not the most original plot has the President’s daughter being kidnapped (hate it when that happens) while touring a war zone, , and she is being held in a maximum security women’s prison.  She has to be rescued soon, or she will be put to death.  So, women’s prison … that means a women’s task force to get her out, and that’s just what we have as a bunch of hard-boiled ladies with significant military skills are assembled to make the break.  Stars including Vivica A. Fox, Brigitte Nielsen, and Zoe Bell.  Shot inside a California women’s prison for authenticity. Rated 18A.

EASY RIDER (1969):

The late Dennis Hopper co-wrote (along with Peter Fonda) and starred in what is surely the classic road picture as two guys hit the roads of American on their choppers.  Watch for a supporting role by music producer Phil Spector.
