1.THE HANGOVER PART III:
Part II wasn’t half the movie that the first one was, and in part three we drift even further away from the hilarious originality. All the usual suspects are back – Ed Helms, Bradley Cooper, Zack Galifianakis – and the wolfpack has decided that Alan needs treatment for his mental issues … there is a kidnapping, Mr. Chow is once again in play, but the whole thing feels contrived and bent on doing nothing more than cashing in on the past. Which it does. Rated 18A.

2. THE PURGE:
Ethan Hawke and Lena Heady (Game of Thrones) star in this low-budget but very intense horror thriller about a time in the near future when all the aggression, crime, and brutality is gone from our society … and that’s because for one night each year, for a 12 hour period, anything goes. Nothing is illegal – not murder, not theft, not rape – and good citizens like the family headed by Hawke and Heady’s characters, wait it out in heavily armoured homes until it is once again safe to go out. When one of the children let’s the wrong person into the house as night falls, the horror begins. A very solid thriller!! Rated 18A.

3. AFTER EARTH:
This is a warning, not a recommendation. Will Smith is the star here, along with his son Jaden, in a sci-fi movie that Smith also produced, about a spacecraft’s crash on a hostile planet. Playing father-and-son in the movie, the younger Smith must strike out across the forbidden landscape to seek help while Dad lies injured in the craft. Poorly scripted, badly acted, with no real tension or decent special effects, this is little more than a vanity project for Will to showcase his offspring. Rated 14A.
