  • 1. IRON MAN 3:

The biggest movie of the year so far at the box office once again brings back Robert Downy, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, and a surprising new villain called The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) in a special effects extravaganza in which the action, the explosions, and the hand-to-hand combat just never end. I saw this as the best Iron Man movie to date because the characters are all set, there is little exposition, just right to the action. In the process, Stark loses everything and has to rely on his wits, not his suit. Rated 14A.

  • 2. THE KINGS OF SUMMER:

This is a very fine festival film that got great notices at Sundance but didn’t get a lot of distribution, so the chances are good you did not see it in a theatre near you. Joe is in his early teens, and he hates that his single-dad father tries to micromanage his life … so, doing what many 14 year-olds would like to do, he hooks up with two friends, they run away from home to a little cabin in the woods … and become independent … sort of. It’s a comedy-drama with some very insightful moments. Watch for a nice little role by Megan Mullally (she was Karen on Will & Grace) among this group of no-name actors. Rated 14A.

  • 3. UNFINISHED SONG:

This one was released in theatres in the UK under the title “Marion’s Song,” and it tells the story of a pensioner named Arthur (Terence Stamp) and his struggle to get over his wife’s death. In part, to work through his grief, he joins the choir of which she was a key part. A touching, funny, and well-crafted film with some good British actors in the cast including Vanessa Redgrave and one-time Dr. Who Christopher Eccleston. Rated 14A.

  • IRON MAN 3:

Watch for Robert Downey Jr’s. scramble through the rubble of the destruction of his futuristic house … it looks like he gets and ankle injury … which he did, holding up production for several days.

THE ODD COUPLE (1968):

The second of Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau’s 10 films together is arguably the best … still one of the funniest movies ever made!

  • PRISONERS:

A solid chiller with Hugh Grant as a dad whose daughter and best friend are kidnapped

  • BATTLE OF THE YEAR 3D:

Dance movie in the “Step-Up” vein

  • THE WIZARD OF OZ IMAX:

What can you say about a movie from 1939 that’s still in theatres?
