1. DEAD MAN DOWN:
There are two excellent things about this film – its lead actors, Colin Farrell, who is a tough, mob-connected guy named Victor, and Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) who is Beatrice, an emotionally and physically damaged woman who sees Victor do something no one was meant to see. She blackmails him into helping her with a revenge vendetta, which fits nicely with his own agenda, and soon they have an unholy alliance designed to elicit retribution from those who have wronged them. A gritty, tough movie, but well worth watching these two, who are exceptional. Rated 18A.

2. THE HOST:
Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight books provides the source material here, for a time in the near future when Earth has been taken over by aliens who don’t blow anything up, don’t come in threatening machines, but rather take over human bodies in a painless, unassuming way. Saoirse Ronan (Atonement) is Melanie, one of the last of the free humans, who is taken over by an entity known as Wanderer. Nothing we haven’t seen before, but remember that this is a romantic, young adult story that will appeal tremendously to girls and young woman, ages about 10 – 14 … beyond that, it’s a laugher. If you fall into the target demographic, great little movie … if not, move on! Rated PG.

3. THE POWER OF FEW:
An interesting film that takes place over a 20 minute period of time on a New Orleans street as seen through the eyes of five different people, including a spy, a cop, a tough, well-armed child, and a religious fanatic. Great cast with Christopher Walken and Christian Slater, and a chance to see Q’orianka Kilcher again … at 14 she was amazing as Pocohantas opposite Colin Farrell and Christian Bale. She is equally amazing in this odd, but watchable tale! Rated 14A.

STAR MAN (1984):
This is essentially the same story as “The Host” but done almost 30 years sooner, and with a male (Jeff Bridges) in the lead body-snatching role rather than a female. Bridges got a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his work here.

DESPICABLE ME 2
Great sequel to a fine animated feature

THE LONE RANGER
Terribly disappointing for me, a Lone Ranger fan, but a pretty good comedy for those who are not.
