  • 1. QUARTET:

If you liked “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” you are likely to enjoy this story of Jean Horton (Maggie Smith), a former diva who is a resident of a retirement home for retired musicians. Each year the residents celebrate the birth date of Verdi and Jean, who used to be married to Reggie (Tom Courtney) drops in and disrupts everything. But the show must go on, right? Also stars Billy Connolly and Andrew Sachs (he was Manuel the waiter on Fawlty Towers). This is Dustin Hoffman’s directorial debut. Great fun if you like a terrific Brit picture! Rated 14A.

  • 2. JACK THE GIANT SLAYER:

Magic beans and a giant beanstalk come into play in this special effects-laden version of the Grimm’s Fairytale that shows us what happens when you climb the beanstalk and entire the land of the giants. Nicolas Holt (About a Boy) is Jack, and Eleanor Thompson (Alice in Wonderland) is the princess-in-peril. Although this story follows the fairytale reasonably closely, there are many additions including a two-headed giant that has arguments with itself. Good action, lots of strange creatures, and a pretty good romp. Stanley Tucci and Ian McShane also star. Rated 14A.

  • 3. THE LAST EXORCISM, Part II:

Well, we can only hope that this is the last exorcism, but as long as there is life in this franchise, it will wring out every drop of blood along the way. A follow-up to a 2010 movie that was of the found-footage variety, this one takes a different tack, but it’s no more rewarding. Ashley Bell is Nell, the unfortunate woman from the first movie who was possessed by a demon, but who seemed to be freed from the terror … not so fast .. the sequel has her once again in the grips of the denizens of the Underworld. The most important thing to remember about this film is that it was not screened in advance for critics … and that’s always the kiss of death! Rated 18A.

  • QUARTET:

You have to appreciate British films, and you have to appreciate people over a certain age … but if all that’s in place, this is a delightful romp with some excellent characters.

THE EXORCIST (1973):

Why not treat yourself to the real thin? The scenes in the bedroom, where it looked cold, were actually shot with the temp at -30 F … no wonder it was so spooky!

  • MAN OF STEEL

Add one more to the legend … a different take, to some extent, on the Superman legend, but it works just the same!

  • THIS IS THE END

A lewd R-rated raunch-fest with Seth Rogan and Friends.
