3D/IMAX re-imagining of the Wizard of Oz

  • DEAD MAN DOWN

    Colin Farrell in an action-thriller.

  • 1. THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN, PART2:

Despite its Razzie award for the worst movie of the year, and Kristin Stewart’s Razzie as worst actress, this is actually a pretty good movie considering its predecessors. The best of the Twilight franchise in my opinion. Bella is now a vampire, and their daughter Renesmee is growing quickly and has some super powers of her own … and that’s just the trouble. It is falsely reported to the Vampire leadership that Renesmee is a child who was “turned” … a no-no in the vampire world, with the penalty death to the parent and death to the child. There is a cataclysmic battle scene in the movie that wasn’t in the book – I found that, and the twist ending very rewarding. Rated 14A.

  • 2. WRECK-IT RALPH:

This animated feature is still playing in some theatres where it has done big box office numbers. Ralph is a character in a video game, a villain whose job it is to tear down what others create within the game. He decides that he wants to be a good guy instead of a bad one, and he goes searching for a new game … which could be fatal if he dies outside of the game – because he stays dead, no replays like in the game itself. Pretty good story, and a lot of game pop culture here. Features the voices of John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman. Rated PG.

  • 3. RED DAWN:

A remake of the 1984 original that had a great cast including Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen, this one serves up Liam Hemsworth and Connor Cruise (adopted son of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman) fighting the invading North Koreans instead of the Russians, as they invade Washington State. Not bad for what it is – a low-end action-adventure movie in which a lot of stuff blows up. The special effects update the original substantially. Rated 14A.

  • RED DAWN:

This one sat on the shelf for almost two years because of MGM’s financial problems … and during the wait, had the invading army changed from Chinese to North Korean to avoid offending the second-biggest movie market in the world.

RED DAWN (1984):

This is worth watching just for the Russians and the great cast, just kids back 29 years ago. Charlie Sheen was a rising star, Patrick Swayze oozed charisma and Jennifer Grey, three years before teaming up with Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing already offered a hint of what was yet to come.

  • JACK THE GIANT SLAYER

Great new take on the Grimm’s traditional characters in 3D and IMAX

  • THE LAST EXORCISM, PART II

Sorry low—budget sequel to a movie that didn’t warrant one

  • PHANTOM

Ed Harris is excellent as a Russian Cold War sub commander.
