1. FLIGHT:
Denzel Washington has been nominated for a Best Actor Oscar in this dark, frightening film – frightening for anyone who flies – as airline pilot Whip Whitaker. A tail stabilizer malfunction threatens more than 100 passengers and crew when the plane becomes uncontrollable after a lightning storm, and Whip masterfully lands it with some incredible aerobatics. Just a handful of dead, a hundred saved … but toxicology reports show that he was drunk at the time. Hero or bum? This is not so much the story of an airline crash as it is the crashing and burning of an alcoholic. Rough and raw, it tells a bleak story of addiction, lies, and torment. Washington is amazing, but it’s a tough film to watch. Rated 18A.

2. ALEX CROSS:
Tyler Perry replaces Morgan Freeman in this, the third Alex Cross movie based on the novels of James Patterson. Cross is a cop … and a psychologist, a rare combination, and in this story, he tangles with a serial killer played to ferocious perfection by Matthew Fox (Lost) who has transformed his body amazingly into a lean, mean, tattooed killing machine. Edward Burns co-stars in a brilliant crime procedural … and Tyler Perry does a good job filling in for Freeman, who has become too old to play the character outlined in this story. Rated 14A.

3. HERE COMES THE BOOM:
Kevin James (King of Queens) plays a high school teacher who makes an unusual move to save his school’s athletic programs by doing a fundraiser … and no, he doesn’t decide to “put on a show,” but rather he decides to get in the cage as an extreme marital arts fighter in a cage with some really tough opponents. James lost 40 pounds to play this role, but he’s still the buffoon who tries hard but doesn’t have a chance. Selma Hayek is the love interest, and Henry (The Fonz) Winkler also stars. It’s good fun, for what it is … always like Kevin James, who co-wrote the script! Rated PG.
