  • THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY:

Bilbo Baggins, Gollum, and a mess of other creatures in what is actually a prequel to the Lord of the Rings Trilogy … the action here takes place 40 years before those books came into play.

  • 1. THE BOURNE LEGACY:

Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) is Aaron Cross, another operative working through spy issues at about the same time the previous movie, “The Bourne Ultimatum” is wrapping up its action. It is very helpful to watch the previous film to get the context. Matt Damon isn’t in this movie, and Aaron Cross is not meant to be a substitute for Bourne … he’s just another spy working for the same Agency, trying to solve the same problems. Rachel Weisz co-stars … watch for the motorcycle scene near the end … that’s really Rennery and Weisz doing their own stuntwork … she didn’t know it until just before the bike booted up. Rated 14A.

  • 2. ICE AGE 4: CONTINENTAL DRIFT:

All the usual characters are here once again, including Sid the Sloth (voice of Hank Azaria), Manny the Mammoth (Ray Romano), Ellie the Mammoth (Queen Latifah) and of course, the pre-historic half-squirrel/half-rat named Scrat who is mute, but who sets the tone for the film by setting the continents adrift in his quest for the almighty acorn. Good family fun, lots of laughs, and a lesson, as always, about listening to your parents. Rated PG.

  • 3. TED:

Mark Wahlberg broke new ground in this R-rated comedy about a talking teddy bear, one that has been owned by Wahlberg’s character John Bennett since childhood. They are best pals, and the friendship is tested in a major way when SHE comes on the scene, Lori Collins (Mila Kunis) who is sweet on John, but has difficulty with the tight relationship with his Teddy. Sounds pretty family-friendly so far, but it’s not. The Teddy bear swears like a drunken sailor, the activities surrounding it are profane and lewd, and … well, the movie made buckets full of money at the box office. Seth MacFarlane wrote, directed, and provides the voice of Ted. Rated 18A.

  • THE BOURNE LEGACY:

Yes, you’ll miss Jason Bourne for awhile …but soon you’ll be enthralled by the all-real stuntwork (no wires, no CGI) and the non-stop action.

THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR (1975):

Pearl Harbor Day is December 07 … I love this classic dramatization of the attack on Hawaii, as it includes the many American blunders that just made things worse.

  • PLAYING FOR KEEPS:

Totally dreadful Gerard Butler rom-com that should have gone direct-to-DVD and never into theatres.
