1. LAWLESS:
The true story of the Bondurant brothers of Franklin County, Virginia is a gripping, hard-hitting story that has a great performance by Tom Hardy as Forrest Bondurant, one of the toughest characters you will ever see in a movie, or in life. The Bondurants were rum-runners and bootleggers during Prohibition and were pursued hotly by a tough and somewhat bent US Marshall named Charlie Rakes (Guy Pierce). Shia LaBeouf the youngest brother with something to prove. Not sure he is really up to it, either as an actor or as a brother. Accurate to the times and well-positioned. Good movie! Rated 18A.

2. PARANORMAN:
This animated feature pulled in big bucks at the box office and promises to do the same on download and DVD. Norman (voice of Cody Smit-McPhee) is a young boy who can talk to dead people, but no one except his friend Neil believes it’s the real thing. When an ancient curse imposed by a witch from a previous age threatens his town, and the dead begin to walk among the living, Norman’s the only one who can talk sense into them. Also features the voices of John Goodman and Anna Kendrick. Rated PG.

3. THE APPARITION:
No animation here – it’s a real spooker with real people. If you recall “The Grudge,” this has some similarities to that Japanese horror film. Here, a young couple is victim of strange things that begin to happen, which are traced back to a “let’s see if we can raise up a demon” experiment from college. It is not well-written, not well-executed, and even for a hardcore horror fan such as I, just did not work. Tom Felton (he was Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies) stars, along with Ashley Green (Alice from Twilight). Despite their acting talent, neither can save this one. Rated 18A.
