  • 1.THE CAMPAIGN:

Will Ferrell and Zack Galifinaikis team up as a pair of opposing candidates running for Congress in North Carolina, a put-up job by a couple of influential CEOs who want “their guy” to get in. It’s a short film (85 minutes – about 80 minutes too long for me) and will only work for you if you like bodily-function jokes, sex jokes, crude jokes, and jokes about effeminate people. Couldn’t expect much more from this duo. Directed by Jay Roach (Borat, Little Fockers). Rated 18A.

  • 2. COMA:

This is the made-for-TV mini-series version that was on A & E a couple of months ago, not the big-screen version from 1978. Both were based on Robin Cook’s novel about a big-city hospital where seemingly healthy people die on the operating table, and then disappear. It was a concept – trading in organs for profit – that is more leading-edge today than it was back then. Unfortunately, because this was shown in two parts over two nights, all the good stuff was saved for the second half, meaning the first two hours put you in ... well, in a coma! Lauren Ambrose (Torchwood) stars alongside such veterans as James Woods, Richard Dreyfus, and Geena Davis. Rated 14A.

  • 3. A CHRISTMAS STORY 2:

Well, it’s five years later, Ralphie never did put his eye out with his Red Ryder BB gun, and it’s time for a new adventure. This one is direct-to-DVD and has none of the warmth, charm, or great characterizations of the first one. Perfect example of not doing a sequel when something was pretty much perfect to start with back in 1983. No Darren McGavin (he’s dead) and no Peter Billingsley as Ralphie (he’s a big-time producer now (Iron Man, The Break Up) and no real humour. Daniel Stern (Home Alone) plays Ralphie’s dad and Braeden LeMasters (Men of a Certain Age) plays Ralphie. It’s billed as “the Genuine, Authentic, All-American Christmas” and was shot completely in the Vancouver area. Rated PG.

  • COMA:

You may want to fast-forward through parts of the first two hours just to get things going, but it picks up in the second half.

A CHRISTMAS STORY (1983):

How can you not just want to embrace what is the top-selected Christmas movie of all time?
