1. CHERNOBYL DIARIES:
A horror-thriller from Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity). This time, using first-time director Bradley Parker, the job doesn’t quite get done. Extreme tourists, all young people, talk themselves into getting a tour of the site of the Chernobyl melt-down in the former Soviet Union. Soon they are abandoned in the wasteland, it gets dark, the vehicle won’t start … and SOMETHING is out there … something that begins picking them off one at a time. The mood of horror is very real, and there are parts that will give you the chills, but the payoff at the end isn’t really worth the trip. It’s okay … but only okay. Rated 18A.

2. MADAGASCAR 3: EUROPE’S MOST WANTED:
Picking up where the previous movie (2008) left off in Africa, the foursome of Marty, Melman, Alex, and Gloria are still trying to get home to the Central Park Zoo … but first, they have to find the penguins! Soon they are in Monte Carlo, they have the penguins, they also have King Julian and his entourage, and they need to get across Europe unnoticed … what better way to do that than as part of a circus? On a train headed for the nearest seaport many adventures ensue. Voices of Jada Pinkett-Smith, Ben Stiller, and Sacha Baron Cohen are all back. Great fun for all ages! Rated PG.

3. MOONRISE KINGDOM:
This film has had rave reviews, it was the darling of film festivals everywhere, and director Wes Anderson (Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Royal Tennebaums) has been praised for his originality and his insight. For me … completely lost – but then, I haven’t seen a Wes Anderson film that I understood or liked. Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, and Edward Norton star in a tale of young lovers who disappear into the forest, and soon have everyone including the boy scout troop looking for them. Bruce Willis as a Scout leader? Didn’t’ work for me, nor did the entire film, but critics everywhere loved it. I didn’t get it! Rated 14A.

THE THREE AMIGOS (1986):
Martin Short again … along with Steve Martin and Chevy Chase in a comedy that still gets laughs today. Essentially a spoof of The Magnificent Seven from 1960, it uses the same Mexican village as its filming location.
