1. DARK SHADOWS:
Tim Burton directs. Johnny Depp stars. What more need be said? This is a high-style version of the vampire-driven soap opera that aired on television from 1966 to 1971. It told he story of Barnabas Collins, a vampire long-contained in an inescapable crypt at the behest of a witch named Angelique (Eva Green) whom he wronged back in the 1700s. But now he’s out, he has come back to “help” his family (it is now the 1970s) but the evil witch is still in play. If you like Burton/Depp movies you’ll get your money’s worth. Rated 14A.

2. PEOPLE LIKE US:
Chris Pine (Star Trek’s Captain Kirk) leads an excellent cast that includes Elizabeth Banks and Michelle Pfeiffer in a soap opera saga about Sam (Pine), who has been estranged from his father, but shows up for the old man’s funeral with the hope that he may have been left some money in the will. No cash. It went to someone of whom he has never heard. Thus begins his search for details that uncovers a sister he never knew he had, and a family secret that shakes him to his core. This is a flawed movie, and not syrupy, but it has its place for what it is. Worth a watch! Rated 14A.

3. LOVE, PEACE, AND MISUNDERSTANDING:
Catherine Keener stars as a mom and lawyer who is in the process of divorcing her husband, and who takes her two teenage kids to see their one-time hippie grandmother (Jane Fonda) to repair some damage, build some bridges and try to become a family again. It’s predictable, it plays out like a TV movie, and it’s just a little sappy at times, not that there’s anything wrong with that. It’s no Oscar-nominee, but it has a certain charm that makes it worthwhile. American Idol’s Catherine McPhee also stars. Rated 14A.

DARK SHADOWS:
Jonathan Frid, the actor who played Barnabas on television, has a cameo in this picture. Unfortunately he died two months before the release of the movie, and never saw it.

ON GOLDEN POND (1981):
Henry Fonda’s final movie, and one for which he won the Best Actor Oscar. James Stewart wanted the role, but Jane Fonda had scooped up the rights to the story, and was able to have her father cast. Katherine Hepburn, Jane Fonda. What a cast!
