  • ROCK OF AGES

Tom Cruise takes on the lead role in this movie version of the Broadway play

  • THAT’S MY BOY

Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg as father and son … who only just found out!

  • 1. SHERLOCK HOLMES: GAME OF SHADOWS:

Robert Downey, Jr. again as a disheveled and very non-traditional Holmes.  He’s a boozer and a brawler, and sorry, but that’s just not the way Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote him originally.  It takes awhile to get used to the action-adventure spin and the anti-hero schtick, but once you’re over that, it’s a terrific film. Noomi Rapace (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) is a mystic gypsy, and Jared Harris (replacing Mark Strong) is better as the arch-enemy, the very, very evil Professor Moriarity in a battle to the death to preserve all that is holy in the Sherlock universe.  Moriarity wants world domination, Holmes wants order and discipline.  One of them is going to be terribly disappointed!  Jude Law is Watson once again. Rated 14A.

  • 2. GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE:

Nicolas Cage chews up the scenery once again as the undead motorcyclist who made a deal with the devil in the first movie to save his father – that didn’t work.  The devil is not an honourable guy.  Hiding out in Eastern Europe (a ploy to explain the inexpensive locale for the shoot), Johnny Blaze gets pressed back into action when the devil takes human form and has to be stopped.  The devil is targeting a young boy, for whom a Monk intervenes and calls upon Johnny for help.  In case you have forgotten, this one is based on a Marvel comic book.  Not bad for what it is – Cage is always worth the time! Rated 14A.

  • 3. GOOD DEEDS:

Tyler Perry is the writer, the director, and the producer of yet another focused piece of storytelling, but this is not one of his gender-benders in which he plays Medea, his signature character.  Here, Perry is Wesley Deeds, a businessman whose life is turned upside down when he meets a cleaning woman (Thandie Newton) in his office building who is a single mom with a decidedly different spin on how life works.  Gabrielle Union also stars along with Rebecca Romijin. Rated PG.

  • 4. SHERLOCK HOLMES

Rather than being based on one Sherlock Holmes novel, this one has elements of the Doyle short story “The Final Problem,” as well as the novel “The Empty House, ”The Valley of Fear.”

TAKERS:

Despite some serious plot holes, this is a pretty good thriller.  Will you see the ending coming?  Probably!

  • PROMETHEUS

An excellent sci-fi thriller delivered as only Ridley Scott can do.  A must for fans of the genre!

  • MADAGASCAR 3

As much fun as a barrel of monkeys … which of course, play a key role in this film.
