1. MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL:
The biggest of all four MI films, this one is a spellbinder in every way. Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt, and Jeremy Renner has been written in as a strong support character, designed to be Ethan’s successor once Tom Cruise is all done with the franchise. Cruise does his own stunt work here, and nowhere is it more spectacular than his hanging-by-a-thread action on the tallest building in the world in Dubai. The film opens in a Russian prison, it moves on to Dubai, and makes a stop in Vancouver-as-San Francisco … along the way there are threats of missile attacks starting WWIII and some great driving sequences. An outstanding popcorn movie and a great action-thriller! Rated 14A.

2. AN INVISIBLE SIGN:
Although the title makes this sound a little supernatural, there’s no such thing involved in this Jessica Alba vehicle about a little girl named Mona who, when her father experiences a major health problem, uses mathematics as an escape from reality. As a young adult, Mona teaches math to youngsters. Nice and simple, but the movie, despite a fine performance by Jessica Alba, loses its way several times as it moves from a drama with comedic overtones to a soap opera to ... to a bit of a muddle. Sonia Braga plays her mother, John Shea is the dad. You’ll see why this one took two years to get to DVD. Rated 14A.

3. THE HILLS RUN RED:
This one was made in 2009 and took this long to go directly to DVD – it’s a horror-slasher-thriller that did not get a theatrical release. It has a no-name cast, a no-name writer and director, and is actually, if you like the genre, something of a little gem. The most ambitious slasher movie ever made disappeared before it could be released. Years later, the film is discovered by a group of movie buffs, and they learn quickly that the subject matter in the movie may have been fact rather than fiction. Extremely gory!! Rated 18A.

TAKERS:
Despite some serious plot holes, this is a pretty good thriller. Will you see the ending coming? Probably!

-
LOCKOUT
A sub-par sci-fi film about a kidnapped daughter-of-the-president and the wrongly convicted man who will be pardoned if he gets her back
-
THE CABIN IN THE WOODS
Joss Whedon directed this highly unusual thriller which is better and stranger than you might expect.
