  • THE THREE STOOGES

Purists may not like the Farrelly Brothers’ risqué take on Larry, Curly, and Moe as they try to save the orphanage in which they were raised.

  • LOCKOUT

Guy Pierce in a sci-fi adventure in which an ex-con tries to save the President’s daughter from a terrible fate in outer space.

  • 1. THE IRON LADY:

Yet another Academy Award-winning movie shows up on DVD.  Meryl Streep won Best Actress for her amazing portrayal of Margaret Thatcher, Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1979 to 1990, who saw her country through the Falklands War and many other brushes with disaster.  My only criticism of the film is that it seems to dwell too much on Thatcher’s post-Alzheimer years, and not enough on her in-office years.  Jim Broadbent plays her husband, who became her primary caregiver.  Less a biopic, and more a look back from her now-foggy perspective, I would like to have seen more of the “Iron” and maybe less of the “Lady.”  Great film thought!  Rated PG.

  • 2. THE DARKEST HOUR:

A fair-to- middling sci-fi thriller shot in Moscow has a group of young people struggling to stay alive when invisible aliens invade the earth.  Emile Hirsch (Into the Wild) and Olivia Thrilby (No Strings Attached) are the stars in what threatens, from time to time, to be a story that goes off the rails in terms of believability, but always seems to get back on right at the last moment.  The unseen creatures are attacked Earth through our power supply, and it seems, despite all the greatest minds the world over, that the five young people who are the subjects of the film, are the only ones who can figure out what’s going on, and what might be the route to stop the invaders.  Good special effects!   Rated PG.

  • 3. LOOK UP IN THE SKY: THE AMAZING STORY OF SUPERMAN:

Kevin Spacey narrates this documentary that looks at the origins of the Superman stories, the various incarnations that the Man of Steel has been through, and many of actors who have played him over the years, on television, radio, and on the big screen.  There is also a very cool blooper reel culled from many of these features.  Directed by Kevin Burns (Ancient Aliens), this is a must for comic book and movie aficionados and has enough trivia to keep the lights on in a small city for a year.  Comic book fans such as Gene Simmons of Kiss are interviewed, and Star Wars’ Mark Hamill.  Rated G.

  • 4. THE IRON LADY

Who can refuse a look at Streep’s amazing performance?  No one, that’s who.  Streep spent several months watching newscasts featuring Thatcher, and watched hundreds of hours of newscasts to get the Iron Lady’s mannerisms down just right.

TAKERS:

Despite some serious plot holes, this is a pretty good thriller.  Will you see the ending coming?  Probably!

  • TITANIC 3D

Director James Cameron has scored big once again with the reissue in 3D of the second biggest grossing movie of all time (Avatar was first, but the final Harry Potter was the most profitable).

  • AMERICAN REUNION

Jim, Stifler, and Oz are back 13 years later in an R-rated update to 1999’s American Pie.
