  • 1. REAL STEEL:

Set in the near-future, Hugh Jackman plays a washed up prizefighter who now stays in the fight game with the robots who enter the ring and beat each other into so much tinfoil.  Early on he becomes acquainted with a son he didn’t know he had, and the movie is the journey they go on in determining whether they will have a relationship or not.  Some great special effects with the robots completely believable and the action every bit as good as if they were real boxers … and it’s a great movie to see with your 11 years + kids.  Evangeline Lilly (Kate on “Lost”) co-stars.  Rated PG.

  • 2. 50/50:

Cancer isn’t funny, so at first blush, trying to build a story around it as a comedy really doesn’t work well … although it gets better as we move along.  Shot in Vancouver, home of its co-star Seth Rogan, but set in Seattle, it’s the story of Adam (Joseph Gordon Levitt), a 27 year-old writer of radio programs who is diagnosed with a virulent form of cancer … and he’s given a 50-50 chance of survival.  Kyle (Seth Rogan) is his best friend, a profane slacker, typical of Rogan roles, who actually redeems himself  on the journey through his friend’s illness.  It’s not a laugher, but it’s an interesting character study … and a bomb at the box office.  Based on the real-life experience of the writer Will Reiser. Rated 14A.

  • 3. THE WHISTLEBLOWER:

Based on actual events, Rachel Weisz plays American police officer Kathy Bolkavac  who takes a job through an independent contractor to work as a peacekeeper in post-war Bosnia.  It’s her intent to help build a war-torn country using her law enforcement expertise, but instead she finds a country full of corruption and thievery … and when she steps up to report a sex scandal, and finds it swept under the carpet by the UN, she begins a crusade that could get her killed.  Vanessa Redgrave also stars.  Good film!  Rated 14A.
