  • 1. THE IDES OF MARCH:

Ryan Gosling seems to be everywhere these days, and he is.  Here he is a stone-cold political strategist who works campaign publicity for a Presidential candidate (George Clooney) who may or may not be just a little bit dirty.  You can draw all sorts of parallels here as to who the characters are supposed to be in real life, but the important thing is that this inside look at political dirty tricks, ambition, and … yes, a little sex … will keep you well-engaged.  A great turn by Marisa Tomei as a been-there-done-that journalist, and Paul Giamatti as the head strategist in the opposing camp. Written and directed by George Clooney.  Rated 14A.

  • 2. ABDUCTION:

Taylor Lautner (Jacob from the Twilight series) is the star here, and no, he doesn’t keep his shirt on.  His character stumbles across a missing-kids website with children who were kidnapped, abducted, or just plain disappeared over the past 20 years or … and he sees a photo that can only be him as a young child.  This causes him to rethink everything that has ever happened in his life – who his parents are, where he came from – so the search is on … but not everyone is helpful, and soon it appears that somebody wants him to stop … or else.  It’s a serviceable thriller – got routinely panned by reviewers and critics, but it’s fine for what it is. Rated 14A.

  • 3. COURAGEOUS:

Despite the fact that this is a film produced and distributed by a Christian organization, and the money behind it is all church money, it’s a pretty solid yarn, and yes, it gets preachy, but there’s nothing wrong with that in the context of a good action yarn.  It’s the story of four men, all friends, all police officers, all hired to serve and protect … but what happens when an event strikes so close to home that it shakes up even their most fundamental values?  You don’t have to be an Evangelical Christian to get this one’s message.  Rated PG.

  • 4. THE IDES OF MARCH

Leonardo DiCaprio was originally set to play the Gosling character, but he had a schedule conflict and opted for “J. Edgar” instead … but he stayed on as executive producer.

TAKERS:

Despite some serious plot holes, this is a pretty good thriller.  Will you see the ending coming?  Probably!

  • IRON LADY

Outstanding performance by Meryl Streep, but the movie doesn’t measure up – not the way we want to remember Margaret Thatcher

  • JOYFUL NOISE

A fun story about a gospel competition with Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah – good fun.

  • CONTRABAND

Outstanding Mark Wahlberg action thriller about an ex-smuggler who tries to go straight … but can’t quite pull it off.
