  • IRON LADY

Typical early January movie – a third-rate horror film, made by the French, set in Italy, lots of priests, exorcisms, and a few scary special effects.  Mostly Italian cast with a few token Americans thrown in.

  • JOYFUL NOISE

Queen Latifah & Dolly Parton in a gospel singing competition

  • CONTRABAND/A DANGEROUS METHOD

Wahlberg’s in a tale of counterfeiting

  • BEAUTY & THE BEAST 3D

Keira Knightly in a Fredian slip.

  • 1. MONEYBALL:

Lots of Oscar buzz for this biopic about a few years in the life of manager Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) and the true story of how he took the Oakland As baseball team from a disastrous financial and results situation to being major contenders for the World Series.  Howe did he do it?  He rewrote the way the business of baseball was done by hiring a Harvard Business School grad (Jonah Hill) to spreadsheet the available ball players and pay them accordingly … finding underrated players and playing to their strengths.  All based on fact, all very engaging even if you don’t like baseball!  Rated PG.

  • 2. KILLER ELITE:

Another based-on-fact story, and this one with an action/adventure/spy-thriller cast that is even more elite than the plotline … Jason Statham, Robert DeNiro, Clive Owen, and Prison Break’s Dominic Purcell all combine to play out a round-the-world chase in which a retired special ops agent is pulled back into action to help recover his mentor who has been captured by the bad guys.  Filming locations include Dubai, Morocco, Australia, Jordan, and London.  Based on the book, “The Feather Men,” by adventurer Sir Ranulf Fiennes. Rated 14A.

  • 3. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 3:

Third in the series that started out with a single camera in a bedroom showing us what happened when a couple who heard noises in the night were sleeping.  The little spooker, which was made for less than $15,000, and which made more than $77 million at the box office, has grown up.  The budget this time, for a story that is actually a prequel, not a sequel – it shows us how the young girls, who were young women in the first two instalments, came to engage the powers of darkness which ultimately took everything from them.  This time it’s still cameras in the house, but they are security cameras that show us what happens from room to room when the lights go out.  Don’t watch this by yourself!! Rated 14A.

  • 4. MONEYBALL

Jonah Hill’s character as the Assistant GM, was named Peter Brand.  In fact, the real person was Paul DePodesta.  The reason for the change?  The real DePodesta visited the set and objected to the way his character was being portrayed – as a numbers nerd – and withdrew support and permission to use his name.

TAKERS:

Despite some serious plot holes, this is a pretty good thriller.  Will you see the ending coming?  Probably!

  • THE DEVIL INSIDE

A dreadful European-made film that pretends to be a documentary, Blair Witch-style.  Those prone to motion sickness should watch out!
