THE DEVIL INSIDE
Typical early January movie – a third-rate horror film, made by the French, set in Italy, lots of priests, exorcisms, and a few scary special effects. Mostly Italian cast with a few token Americans thrown in.

1. CONTAGION:
Matt Damon and Marion Cotillard (Piaf) star in a doomsday story of a plague run amok which threatens all human life on earth. It’s an apocalyptic tale that begins with a businesswoman wife (Gwyneth Paltrow) becoming sick on a plane from overseas, who arrives home, gives the virus to her son who quickly dies, and helps with the spread of the deadly contagion in North America before she checks out. Matt Damon’s character is fixated on saving himself and anyone else he can, while a large cast of doctor types (Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law) do what they can with the detective work, trying to save humanity. Despite the stellar cast, not a very strong movie. Rated 14A.

2. I DON’T KNOW HOW SHE DOES IT:
An absolutely dreadful rom-com … well, not much rom, not much com … maybe “sitcom” is better – in which Sara Jessica Parker is badly miscast as an executive wife and mother who is the family breadwinner, and has to deal with a difficult boss (Pierce Brosnan. The premise here: she makes a good income, she deals with home issues effectively, she’s a good mom … all that, and would you believe it? She’s a woman! Who would have thunk it? This one belittles women, belittles men, and doesn’t do much for the movie business either. But … if you’re a SJP fan, might be worth it for you. Rated 14A.

3. THE GUARD:
This one had limited release in theatres, which is bad news for the producers, but good news for those who want to see it at home. It’s a quirky, original, and thoroughly engaging international murder, blackmail, and drug-smuggling story in which a fish-out-of-water Irish cop (Brendan Gleeson) is teamed up with an uptight, by-the-book FBI guy (Don Cheadle) in a crime story that has some great twists and turns, and some superb character development. Think – the Odd Couple, but with guns, and some real bad guys. Good but most profane movie! Rated 18A.

TAKERS:
Despite some serious plot holes, this is a pretty good thriller. Will you see the ending coming? Probably!
