  • THE ADVENTURES OF TIN TIN

A risky film because Tin Tin is not as well-known in North America as in Europe

  • WE BOUGHT A ZOO

Based on a true story, and starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johannssen – directed by Cameron Crowe.

  • 1. MIDNIGHT IN PARIS:

Woody Allen wrote and directed this romantic diversion in which a writer visiting Paris with his wife soon comes to realize that this is the city of his dreams and that the 1920s were the decade of his dreams.  His wife doesn’t share the sentiment.  Owen Wilson plays the lead here, a man named Gil who would have been played by Woody 10 years earlier.  Rachel McAdams is Inez, his wife, and the third main character here is the city of Paris itself.  Funny, romantic, and probably the best work Allen has done in years, Owen Wilson is Allen-esque instead of being himself, which is a great improvement.  Rated PG.

  • 2. MARGIN CALL:

Want to know why the economy is in such a wreck south of the border, and why the waves from those issues impact Canadians, and indeed, the entire world?  Take a look at this fictionalized (slightly) version of a firm that looks suspiciously like Lehman Brothers, a firm that has had its mortgage assets leveraged to the hilt, and a firm that realizes that the jig is up.  Rather than come clean, it packages up billions in worthless mortgages and sells them as good investments – the beginning of the 2008 financial crisis that is still sending waves, not ripples through the economy.  Kevin Spacey, Zachary Quinto, Stanley Tucci, Simon Baker, and Demi Moore star.  So close to the truth it will make you sweat!  Rated 14A.

  • 3. DOLPHIN TALE:

Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd star in this true story of a Florida dolphin that was caught in a crab trap, which did such damage to its tail that it was doomed to death by drowning.  Enter a group of marine aquarium workers who not only save the dolphin, forced to sever its tail in a brutal-but-necessary procedure, and who, over time, create a prosthesis that works almost as good as the real thing.  And just to prove the point, Winter, the name of the dolphin victim to this event, plays herself, complete with the prosthetic tale.  There is a nice little subplot about a young boy’s role in all of this.  An excellent film for the entire family! Rated G.

  • 4. MARGIN CALL

There is virtually no music in this film, but even without it, the tension that builds just on dialogue and exceptional acting becomes absolutely riveting.

TAKERS:

Despite some serious plot holes, this is a pretty good thriller.  Will you see the ending coming?  Probably!

  • ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: CHIPWRECKED

Strictly kidstuff, but a winning formula

  • SHERLOCK HOLMES GAME OF SHADOWS

Better than the first Holmes film from Downey, Jr. with some great pyrotechnics as explosions abound

  • MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL

Not strong on original plot, that’s not really the point as it’s all about Tom Cruise!
