A pre-prequel that goes back even further in the story of the two sisters who bring something evil into the world

Orlando Bloom, Christoph Waltz … how much better does it get?
  • 1. SUPER 8:

I loved this movie which combined the creative talents of Steven Spielberg and JJ Abrams (“Lost”) to spin out a tail from the viewpoint of a group of young people circa 1979, very early in their teens, who are movie makers.  In fact, the story is somewhat autobiographical as Abrams used his father’s Super 8 camera to make movies when he was a kid.  The tale here has our young heroes sneaking out at night to do a shoot at the train station where they witness a catastrophic derailment that releases “something” into the countryside from an armored boxcar.  That “something” was being transported from Area 51 and was alien in nature. Elle Fanning (Dakota’s younger sister) is the femme fatale in the little movie they are making, which has a zombie theme. Rated PG.

Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is back, this time starring with Penelope Cruz and the usual suspects including Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa.  The object of the game this time is to pursue the Fountain of Youth, which both Captain Jack and his rival are after … when they find that Blackbeard (Ian McShane) is also on the case.  Keith Richard is back as Captain Jack’s father in a cameo, Cruz was pregnant during the filming, and had all of her long shots done by her sister, while she did the close-ups.  Although I love Johnny Depp as Captain Jack, I found the bloom off the rose on this movie.  Not much new to show us. Rated PG.

Any one of us beyond a certain age has seen this premise played out a thousand times -  we have a princess, we have an ordinary girl, and by amazing coincidence, the look exactly alike and can change places at will.  However, the target audience for this film, young teen and pre-teen girls, has had no such history lesson, so it’s all new to them.  Selena Gomez leads a youthful cast as three girls go to Paris for the summer, where one is a dead-ringer for a British heiress, and before you know it, she’s living the good life … until the heiress finds out.  Leighton Meester and Corey Monteith (Glee) also star. Rated  PG.

Don’t turn off your DVD player when the credits start to roll … the zombie movie that the kids are making is played out over the credits.

Despite some serious plot holes, this is a pretty good thriller.  Will you see the ending coming?  Probably!

Steve Martin is Cynical, Jack Black is funny in this oddball comedy

If you don’t remember Kevin Bacon, you’ll love this … if you do … well, too bad!

Great remake of a standard creature feature!
