1. X-MEN: FIRST CLASS:
Some origins movies are just downright silly, and the odd one breaks the mold such as this one. You don’t have to be a hardcore X-Men fan to get what this movie does as it introduces us to Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and his nemesis Magneto (Michael Fassbender) at a very early age … when they were friends and allies. How they came to meet the mutants of various powers, and how they came to end up on opposite sides is a terrific yarn. You will recognize some of the mutants and their powers while others will be new to you. Excellent film! Rated 14A.

2. HANNA:
This action/adventure/spy thriller had a great premise, super talent, but lost its way just a little when it came to story. Saoirse Ronan (Atonement) and Eric Bana (The Incredible Hulk) are daughter and father living at the Arctic Circle in Finland in the most remote of settings, where he teaches her the marital arts, how to hunt, how to kill, and how to survive, having her learn, almost since birth, how to become the perfect assassin. Soon, the time comes to send her out into the world to right some major wrongs. The story goes astray a little, but the concept is original enough to keep us engaged. Cate Blanchette is a stone-cold villain. Rated 14A.

3. CHILDREN OF THE CORN: GENESIS:
This is a direct-to-DVD horror-chiller that focuses on a couple who stumble into a remote desert compound after having been lost and stranded, a standard horror device used in everything from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to The Hills Have Eyes, to Jeepers Creepers. They soon find that all is not as it appears to be, and a cult maybe worshipping/executing a young boy who seems to have a demon resident within. Or not. It isn’t high art … it’s a barely passable fifth generation corn movie a long, long way from the 1984 original based on the Stephen King novel. King had nothing whatsoever to do with this story. Rated 18A.

TAKERS:
Despite some serious plot holes, this is a pretty good thriller. Will you see the ending coming? Probably!

AP0LLO 18
Pretending to be “lost footage,” this is a serviceable sci-fi thriller
-
SHARK NIGHT 3D
Strictly for those who don’t need anything more than young women in skimpy bathing suits and sharks that put the chomp on everything!
-
THE DEBT
Interesting spy thriller with Helen Mirren … but a disturbing ending!
