  • 1. THE BEAVER:

Did this movie tank at the box office because it starred Mel Gibson, and audiences wanted to punish him – or is it just not that good a movie?  I’ll go for the latter – the story is about a business executive who goes into a suicidal depression, and somehow finds his voice through a hand puppet.  Hard to believe, but that’s the premise of the film that was directed by Jodie Foster, who also co-stars.  Give Foster full marks for taking a chance on hiring Gibson, who actually does a good job with a very strange film. Rated PG.

  • 2. HENRY’S CRIME:

Keanu Reeves is the title character, a toll booth collector who gets caught up in a bank heist as a bystander, but chooses jail rather than giving up the true identities of the crooks.  On release from prison, he decides to rob the bank he was originally jailed for holding up.  A complex story with a good cast that includes James Caan and Vera Famiga.  It’s a comedy, believe it or not! Rated 18A.

  • 3. TOUCHING HOME:

Twins Logan and Noah Miller tell the true story of their father, a man who spent his last 16 years homeless and alcoholic on the streets.  They were pursuing major league baseball careers while their father was adrift.  The twins financed this film with 17 credit cards, they talked Ed Harris into playing their father, and they came out with a masterpiece of a little festival film.  It’s three years old now, and took this long to get to DVD, but it was worth the weight.  Rated PG.
