  • 1. SOMETHING BORROWED:

I like the rom-com genre if it’s done well … sometimes these films are predictable, sometimes not.  Put this one in the “not” category.  Ginnifer Goodwin is Rachel.  Her best friend Darcy (Kate Hudson) is getting married to Dex (Colin Egglesfield) and Rachel is the maid of honour … but just how would Darcy feel about this if she learned that Rachel, who had a crush on Dex in college, ends up in his bed – before he marries Darcy?  That’s the dilemma in what is an interesting study in character with some good laughs, but also with an intriguing message, as well as an ending that you aren’t likely to see coming. Rated PG.

  • 2. PRIEST:

Paul Bettany is the title character here, residing in a post-apocalyptic alternate world in which humans have been at war with vampires for generations.  These aren’t your tux-wearing, “I vant to bite your neck” vampires either … they are much more diabolical.  The uneasy truce between the vampires and humans has the Priests, those who fought the beasts hand-to-hand, living on the margins of society just like today’s Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans.  A specific event triggers Priest’s need to go back to the fight … the ruling authorities say no, so he’s on his own.  Great action thriller! Rated 14A.

  • 3. HOODWINKED TOO!  GOOD VS EVIL:

Red Riding Hood is back in this animated sequel to the film from four years ago that introduced us to Granny (Glenn Close) who appears to run a spy agency, and Red (Hayden Pannetierre) who is a covert operative.  This one follows the action as Red is on the Hansel and Gretel caper, two little lost German tots who are far, far more than they appear to be.  Directed at kids, but with a complex internal story that only adults will get. Rated G.

  • 4. RICK’S PICK: PRIEST

Karl Urban does a great impression of Clint Eastwood’s Man With No Name in this thriller which is a little hard to follow at first, but which gets it on in a big way quickly.

TAKERS:

Despite some serious plot holes, this is a pretty good thriller.  Will you see the ending coming?  Probably!

  • FINAL DESTINATION 5

If you liked the first four, this horror-thriller will deliver the goods for the fifth time

  • THE HELP

Excellent story of  60s Southern US with some great performances by the “domestics.”

  • GLEE: THE 3D CONCERT MOVIE

    Gleeks will love this one

  • 30 MINUTES OR LESS

Profane R-rated bank heist movie that will work well for fans of the genre.
