  • FINAL DESTINATION 5

If they have done 5 of these, couldn’t be very “final,” right?

  • GLEE: THE 3D CONCERT MOVIE

The Glee cast was on the road this spring … and here is the result

  • 30 MINUTES OR LESS

Jessie Eisenberg in an R rated comedy about crooks who kidnap a pizza delivery guy and use him as their front man in a robbery.

  • 1. PAUL:

Sometimes movies take a long time to make it to DVD, and sometimes it’s a good thing.  This was released to theaters in March, which would normally make it a late May release. Paul is a computer-generated special effect … he’s an alien who has been kept at Area 51, but now he’s out and he wants to go home in the flying saucer that brought him.  Sounds like a sci-fi adventure, right?  Well, yes, but … Paul is somewhat profane, has learned most of what he seems to know about earth from  Seth Rogan movies, and when he’s sees a pair of dudes in a motorhome and kidnaps them, the story is set. Stars Seth Rogan and Simon Pegg.  Rated 14A in Canada, “R” in the States.

  • 2. JUMPING THE BROOM:

This one hit theatres in Canada in June, and here it is on DVD already.  It did very, very well at the box office in the States, but didn’t get much play here.  A largely African-American cast brings this story of a couple being married whose families are from two very distinct social classes into a dramatic comedy mode.  Angela Bassett, Mike Epps and Loretta Devine star … and for those who remember “Roots,” you recall what the term “jumping the broom” means – it’s how marriages occurred on plantations during the days of Slavery. Rated PG.

  • 3. MARS NEEDS MOMS:

Animated story that mixes sci-fi with family values sees young Milo’s mom abducted by Aliens because Martians, it seems, really like the values that Earth moms impart to Martian children.  Unseen, Milo hitches a ride on the spaceship to the Red Planet, and learns, as he observes in secret, that things don’t end well for the abducted Moms after they have done what’s necessary for their Martian kiddies.  Voices of Joan Cusak and Billy Dee Williams. Rated PG.

  • 4. RICK’S PICK: JUMPING THE BROOM

A far better wedding-and-family clash than many of this genre, particularly the Tyler Perry movies, this one offers more than a few quick laughs … it offers some rare insight into why people do what they do.

TAKERS:

Despite some serious plot holes, this is a pretty good thriller.  Will you see the ending coming?  Probably!

  • RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

James Franco and Andy Serkis join up with some great special ape effects to tell a disturbing tale of genetic engineering that I quite liked.

  • THE CHANGE-UP

Too raunchy for my taste, this body-swapping story offers good performances by Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman, in an “R” rated comedy sort of way.
