  • RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES

A prequel to the series that offered up an earth run by talking simians

  • THE CHANGE-UP

Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman in a R rated version of Freaky Friday with two guys trading places – one happily married, the other a guy on the prowl.

  • 1. RIO:

Animated tale of a rare blue Macaw named Blu, who is the last male of his kind.  He has a great life in the States, with an owner who adores him, and a fantasy world that he inhabits.  It all changes when a zoologist comes knocking, saying that in order to protect the species, he needs to be relocated to South America where the last female of the species waits.  Blu isn’t sure he wants to make the trip … he’s all Macaw … except that he can’t fly.  And when he encounters bird-nappers and other nefarious characters, things get dicey.  Great colour and action – fun for adults and children alike! Rated G.

  • 2. SOULSURFER:

Terrific depiction of the true story of teen surf champ Bethany Hamilton of Hawaii, who had a great sports career ahead of her when … she was attacked by a shark which took her arm off at the shoulder.  Annasophia Robb plays the lead role in convincing fashion, and the digital effects make you belief she really is short a limb.  Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt play her parents most convincingly as we watch Bethany’s struggle to get back on a surfboard again.  Excellent film, inspiring, and true! Rated PG.

  • 3. AIRLINE DISASTER:

This one was never in theatres – direct to DVD, and if you choose to pick it up or download it, you’ll quickly see why it never got face-time on the big screen.  Meredith Baxter stars in the supposed tale of intrigue as the President of the United States whose brother is on an airliner that is hijacked.  Does she save him, or save the country.  Duh!  The title could be one word shorter … just “Disaster.”  This is a dreadful film, poorly written and acted, and full of aviation mistakes.  You have been warned! Rated PG.

  • 4. RICK’S PICK: SOULSURFER

Even though we know exactly what happens to young Bethany, and how things end up, this movie has all the drama of a tightly-scripted work of fiction, and yet it’s all fact!

TAKERS:

Despite some serious plot holes, this is a pretty good thriller.  Will you see the ending coming?  Probably!

  • COWBOYS AND ALIENS

Good idea, not terribly well-executed, but you can’t go wrong with Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford

  • SMURFS

Strictly for kids, the little blue guys are back

  • CRAZY STUPID LOVE

Steve Carrell is dating again after years of marriage, but he’s getting his advice from all the wrong places – pretty good rom-com.
