  • HORRIBLE BOSSES

Three employees with bosses from hell decide to get rid of the bosses before the bosses get rid of them … Jason Bateman stars in this R-rated comedy

  • ZOOKEEPER

Kevin James in a comedy in which the title says it all.

  • 1. THE COMPANY MEN:

Ben Affleck turns in a solid performance in what is not exactly a feel-good movie.  He is Bobby Walker, husband, father, hard-working business up-and-comer, who, along with two other colleagues, gets let go when the company downsizes due to the recession. His job gone, his home is next on the list, his self-respect is vanishing, and his family could be next.  An almost clinical case study of what many have faced, especially in the US, with the struggling economy.  Chris Cooper and Tommy Lee Jones co-star. Rated 14A.

  • 2. OF GODS AND MEN:

The Grand Prize winner at Cannes last year, and a strong contender at film festivals for best foreign film, this little movie tells a big story.  Shot in Morocco, it spins the tale of a group of Christian Monks in a Muslim country who become the targets of terrorists.  It’s not a war film by any stretch though, and it’s not a film that follows the action-adventure trail, but rather one that focuses on the inner battle that rages within each of these Holy men as they come to grips with whether they go or whether they stay … and why that might be. A largely no-name cast is led by Lambert Wilson.  Rated PG.

  • 3. HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN:

Definitely on my top five list of the worst movies I have ever seen, and I don’t mean that in a good way.  Based on a fake trailer for the Quentin Tarentino-Robert Rodriguez movie “Grindhouse,” this Canadian-made production was commissioned after Machete did so well, also originating as a fake trailer from the same movie.  “Hobo” stars Rutger Hauer as a bum who arrives in town hoping to come up with enough money to buy a lawnmower and use it to turn his life around by becoming a yard maintenance person.  Instead, he learns that the town, totally corrupt under an evil crime boss, can only be helped if he buys a shotgun instead … and uses it.  Terrible production values and a nowhere story. Rated 18A.

  • 4. RICK’S PICK: THE COMPANY MEN

Ben Affleck proves that he is more than just a pretty face once again as he turns in a journeyman performance as a challenged family and corporate man … but remember, when you’re lying on that deathbed, it isn’t likely the company that’s going to be holding your hand.

TAKERS:

Despite some serious plot holes, this is a pretty good thriller.  Will you see the ending coming?  Probably!

  • TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON

You can get battle fatigue from this two-hours-plus action-thriller, but it is by far the best Transformers movie ever made, thanks in part to Leonard Nimoy

  • MONTE CARLO

Typical teen fare that plays like an episode of The Patty Duke Show from the ‘60s

  • LARRY CROWN

Good rom-com co-written by Tom Hanks and MBFGW’s Nia Vardalos.
