  • 1. I AM NUMBER FOUR:

A better-than-average sci-fi action-adventure with teen stars, and designed to appeal primarily to teens, this one features other-worldly aliens (think Superman and the planet Krypton)  with special powers, who look like very handsome-for-the-guys, beautiful-for-the-girls regular teens.  Aussi heartthrob Alex Pettyfer is “John Smith,” a teen on the run, along with his handler (Timothy Olyphant) … he is number four, and numbers one, two, and three have already been destroyed.  Who are the hunters, and why are they hunting?  Could be the end of the world as we know it!  Pretty good yarn!  Rated PG.

  • 2. GNOMIO AND JULIETTE:

This is a silly little animated feature about garden gnomes and their challenges and love lives.  It’s simple, doesn’t have a lot of action, and should have passed by with barely a blip … except that it stayed in the top five at the box office for eight weeks, a staggering accomplishment for a nowhere, no-nothing little movie.  Strictly for kids, but with a certain charm … simple is the operative word here though … don’t go expecting any Shrek-style adult-level sophistication. Rated G.

  • 3. ALL GOOD THINGS:

Based on an actual unsolved murder case in New York, this dramatization has a good cast including Ryan Gosling and Kirstin Dunst.  Recently uncovered evidence is introduced and adds fuel to what is both a love story and a murder mystery.  At the end of it all, speculation is added to the evidence, and the resolution is a sort of … “could this be the way it was?” ending.  Critical reviews were mixed, and its distribution was spotty, but everyone agrees that the performances are good. Rated 14A.

  • 4. RICK’S PICK: I AM NUMBER FOUR:

Watch for the action concerning the pet Beagle when The Mogs (aka the interstellar bad guys) attack.  It’s the best scene in the movie, and again, it deserved far more than what it got at the box office … it’s open for a sequel, and I hope that happens!

TAKERS:

Despite some serious plot holes, this is a pretty good thriller.  Will you see the ending coming?  Probably!

  • PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES

Liked it, but didn’t love it, although I loved Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow every moment he was on-screen.  Takes awhile to get going, Penelope Cruz doesn’t add much, but once in the pocket, it delivers.  Feels a lot like the next theme ride at Disneyland.
