Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. How can you possibly go wrong? Well, maybe by having a script that is too soft, too laid back, and too slow … and by having less chemistry between the two big stars than the reaction between salt and pepper … not much really happens. Oh, its worth watching for Jolie’s incredible poise and elegance … and for the hope that something will actually happen, but in reality, pretty slow. Depp’s character is an American on a train in Europe who gets pulled into a strange series of events by the mysterious Jolie – great eye candy, and worth recommending for that reason … but no action, thrills, or high adventure. Rated PG.
2. SKYLINE:
Didn’t stay in theatres long enough to make a real dent, but this alien-lights-in-the-sky-over-LA has a certain charm to it, and soft sci-fi sort of way. A largely no-name cast headed by Eric Balfour tries to evade and avoid the strange lights that literally suck people right off the planet. Since I like sci-fi, it worked for me, but it’s not everyone’s cup of plasma. Rated 14A.
3. YOGI BEAR:
This is not the Yogi Bear from the Hanna-Barbera cartoons of the late ‘50s and early ‘60s. This Yogi is far too much the smart alec, and he has no real charm. The story takes on a decidedly environmental twist, which I suppose is okay, but really doesn’t fit well with the character that we have come to know. Younger viewers (under 40) won’t know the difference … but those who are more discriminating (read “older”) won’t be happy. Voices of Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timeberlake … Timberlake as Boo-Boo? Puhleeze! Rated G.

Writer/producers Greg and Colin Strauss created the special effectis equipment themselves … filming cost just $500,000 … the special effects cost $10 million.
TAKERS:
Despite some serious plot holes, this is a pretty good thriller. Will you see the ending coming? Probably!
