1. HEREAFTER:
Matt Damon, who is everywhere these days, stars in this unusual movie about three people, totally unconnected, who deal with death in their own way. George (Damon) works at a blue collar job because he doesn’t want to be a psychic who speaks to the dead any longer; Marie is a French journalist who witnesses sudden death during the tsunami in Thailand, and a British schoolboy loses his twin brother. How they differ and how they are similar is the key here as their lives slowly come together. A very unusual film … but good! Rated PG.

2. THE FIGHTER:
Oscars for Best Supporting Actor (Christian Bale) and Best Supporting Actress (Melissa Leo) won’t take the grit out of this hard-scrabble film about a real-life boxer (Mark Wahlberg) looking for the title shot that eluded his older half-brother. Gritty, tough, but remarkable in its portrayals, this one is full value for the Oscars. And watch for Conan O’Brien’s sister as one of the family! Rated 14A.

3. HOW DO YOU KNOW:
Tanked at the box office despite staring turns by Reese Witherspoon, Jack Nicholson, and Owen Wilson. Witherspoon is Lisa, a softball player all washed up at 27, and stuck in a bizarre triangle between her baseball player boyfriend, and a corporate executive with troubles of his own. Billed as a rom-com, there is a little rom, but not much com. Rated PG.

TAKERS:
Despite some serious plot holes, this is a pretty good thriller. Will you see the ending coming? Probably!
