  • 1. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2:

Pretty scary stuff, this.  It’s a sequel, actually a prequel, to the original, which took its investment of a couple of thousand dollars and parlayed it into almost a hundred million at the box office.  This time we see the events leading up to the paranormal activity of the first movie, as something supernatural and very, very scary is stalking a family, looking to do horrific things.  Still low-budget, this is a clever film, and it’s even better than the first.  Rated 18A.

  • 2. LIFE AS WE KNOW IT:

Hardly a rom-com premise when it starts out with the death in a car crash of a promising young couple who leave a little baby behind, but that’s the set-up for Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel, a couple who have a disastrous first date, hate each other, but end up being guardians to an infant when the parents die.  Do they grow to love one another?  Are there dozens of diaper jokes?  You might just as well ask if Charlie Sheen likes a party.  Rated 14A.

  • 3. MY SOUL TO TAKE:

Horror-meister Wes Craven directs this predictable-but-grisly horror-thriller in which a long-dead (so we think) serial killer starts taking out teens who were all born on the night he died.  Reincarnation?  Resurrection?  Maybe both?  It’s a record-breaker though – it holds the record for the smallest opening of any 3D movie in history.  And so it should! Rated 18A.

  • 4. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2:

This one cost $2.75 million to make – many times more than the original … and so far, prior to the DVD release, it has taken in $175 million.  Not a bad investment!

TAKERS:

Despite some serious plot holes, this is a pretty good thriller.  Will you see the ending coming?  Probably!

  • SANCTUM

Great underwater photography and great 3D effects in this based-on-fact story from James Cameron’s production company

  • THE ROOMMATE

Standard thriller in which you can see it all coming a kilometer away!
