  • 1. PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME:

Based on a video game, this spectacle starring Jake Gyllenhaal in the title role, is one of the few box office duds that super-producer Jerry Bruckheimer has ever delivered.  The reason?  Bad chemistry (actually “no” chemistry) between the star and his female lead (Gemma Arterton) and storylines that play out like a video game, going from one level to the next.  Prince Dastan (Gyllenhaal) and orphan adopted into royalty, fights for a dagger that turns back time … Sir Ben Kingsley is excellent but a typecast villain, and the movie goes on far too long.  Rated PG.

  • 2. LETTERS TO JULIET:

I found this romance set in Verona, Italy, a delightful study on love and loss, on relationships gained and gone, and a superbly cast picture, with Vanessa Redgrave and Franco Nero (real life couple).  The premise: Amanda Seyfried is an engaged young  woman whose hubby-to-be takes her to Europe while he scouts out wines and recipes for his New York restaurant.  She has time on her hands and learns of the secretaries of Juliet – women who get letters by the hundreds to Shakespeare’s Juliet, and embarks on a journey of discovery that will touch your heart. Rated PG.

  • 3. JUST WRIGHT:

Nice spin here for NBA fan Queen Latifah who is a physiotherapist to an NBA star (Common) and soon finds that there’s more to the relationship than therapy.  A rom-com that’s got a sports-spin for the guys.  Rated PG.

  • 4. LETTERS TO JULIET:

Watch the chemistry between Franco Nero and Vanessa Redgrave.  Only real lovers who have really been separated for years, and then found each other again, can pull this off!

THE WAY WE WERE (1973):

Speaking of real lovers … it’s all acting here with Streisand and Redford but their love story still resonates 37 years later.  He is Hubble Gardner, a natural for whom things just seemed to come to easy ... and she is Katie, campus activist. Watch for a cameo by Marvin Hamlisch, and watch for James Woods … this was his first film.

  • RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE 3D

It’s a videogame come to life on-screen, but it’s a great one – fabulous action, terrific special effects, and 3D really adds to the experience.  This one is well worth the extra $3.
