  • THE AMERICAN

George Clooney is an assassin on the move
  • GOING THE DISTANCE

Drew Barrymore and Justin Long in an “R” rated romance

  • MACHETE

A hard-edged thriller based on the trailer for “The Grindhouse.”

  • 1. HARRY BROWN:

Michael Caine, who is one of the most honest actors in the business is the title character here in a film that explores what happens when a man takes the law into his own hands.  It’s a revenge movie of sorts, as Harry is a law-abiding man struggling with the chaos of the teen violence around him … and when his only true friend falls victim to the gangs, he chooses to do something about it.  Rated 18A.

  • 2. MARMADUKE:

Strictly for kids, this talking-dog movie based on the Great Dane comic character isn’t going to get nominated for any awards, but kids won’t care.  The dog talks, the cat talks, and everyone is very happy about all that.  The big guy moves into a new neighbourhood with his family, doesn’t fit in well, and has to learn some lessons. Rated G.

  • 3. BABIES:

A most interesting documentary that follows four babies in their first year of life.  Making the obvious comparisons between these children, one born in San Francisco, and the others in Namibia, Mongolia, and Tokyo, shines a light not only on the respective cultures, but on what we as North Americans have … and have not – when it comes to raising babies. Rated G.

  • 4. HARRY BROWN:

Although it makes me feel old to see Michael Caine playing an “elderly man,” his performance here is one of his best – clearly not one of the films he did just for the money!

DEATH WISH  (1974):

36 years old and still one of the best revenge movies out there – Charles Bronson is superb as a man who sees his wife murdered by street punks and decides to make things right. It spawned three sequels, but none as good as the original.

  • TAKERS

Great heist movie with Matt Dillon as the cop who makes a difference

  • THE LAST EXORCISM

Scary but not horribly frightening … kind of a standard spook-a-thon
