  • THE TWILIGHT SAGA: ECLIPSE

The vampires are back yet again!
  • THE LAST AIRBENDER

    M. Night Shymalin tries once more to equal his Sixth Sense movie.

  • 1. HOT TUB TIME MACHINE:

Yet another movie about grown men who have never grown up, hence the riddle the ladies ask:  what’s the difference between men and wine?  Answer:  wine matures.  John Cusak leads a cast that includes Crispin Glover and Chevy Chase as a bunch of friends gather at a ski resort, get into the hot tub, and find that it takes them back to 1986.  It’s a chance to change their future.  But that’s all in the past!  Rated 18A.

  • 2. PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS; THE LIGHTNING THIEF:

Based on a series of young adult novels, I was pleasantly surprised at this yarn that has modern-day teen Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman) learning that he is part Greek god and part human, and fighting the good fight with the likes of Medusa (delightfully played by Uma Thurman) with support from Pierce Brosnan.  Good cast, good special effects, and a better-than-expected storyline.  Rated PG.

  • 3. THE CRAZIES:

A remake of the George Romero follow-up to Night of the Living Dead, this one is about small town USA where an illness turns most of the populace into flesh-eating zombie types.  Timothy Olyphant is the sheriff who has to try to make everything right, but in the meantime, a lot of heads get blown off.  Strictly for zombie fans.  Rated 18A.

  • 4. PERCY JACKSON & THE OLYMPIANS:

When Poseidon turns out to be your dad, when you’re accused of stealing the lightning bolts Zeus, and when your mother goes missing, it’s time to takeoff the gloves, battle the Minotaur, and deal with the legacy of ancient Greece.  Good fun!

LOGAN’S RUN  (1976)

Michael York is the star in this sci-fi thriller that  is being remade for re-release as we speak.  Great premise:  it’s the 23rd Century, and to control Earth’s population, everyone wears a “life clock.”  At age 30, you are “recycled” … until some find out that this is just a euphemism for “dead” and they go on the run.  Great yarn!

  • KNIGHT AND DAY

There are plot holes in the Cameron Diaz-Tom Cruise spy thriller that you could drive a truck through, turn it around, and drive it back … but who cares?  The movie is just plain good fun!

  • GROWN UPS

This is what you would expect from an Adam Sandler comedy … man-boys played by Kevin James, David Spade, and Rob Schneider show their kids and spouses that it’s not about maturity … because there is no here!
