  • A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET

The first “Elm Street” movie not to star Freddie Krueger … goes back to where the franchise began
  • FURRY VENGEANCE

Brendan Fraser against the furry creatures of the woods!
  • GUNLESS

Paul Gross as an American gunslinger in the old west …who comes to Canada – no guns allowed!
  • 1. IT’S COMPLICATED:

Alec Baldwin and Meryl Streep are a couple divorced for several years, he has remarried, and their adult children have arrived at the place where they can accept things … but a family gathering with all the blended families, a little too much to drink, and some liberties taken by the former married couple find them … well, compromised.  Now what?  Some good laughs, a nice turn by Steve Martin as a new love interest for Streep’s character, and some crisp writing make this one worthwhile. Rated PG.

  • 2. THE DESCENT 2:

This is a sequel to the 2005 original which was, in my opinion, the scariest movie I have ever seen.  Never released to theatres in North America, the sequel has one of the original characters, Sarah, played by Shauna Macdonald, return to step out into the sunlight, bloodied and brutalized after a horrific experience in a subterranean cave system … only to be forced to go back in to the place where her companions were viciously killed by … something!  Veddy, veddy scary! Rated 14A.

  • 3. REFLECTIONS:

Timothy Hutton stars in the direct-to-DVD thriller about a brutal murder, and DNA evidence that reveals far more about what happened than one might expect.  European locations and a sold, riveting story line make this a great thriller.  Rated 14A.

  • 4. IT’S COMPLICATED:

I loved The descent 2, but horror-thrillers are an acquired taste, while romantic comedy, especially when it involves people of “a certain age” is pretty special too.  Alec Baldwin used a body double for his nude scene.

THE DESCENT (2005):

Only four years old, but a classic for me … this movie made me squirm, the tension was so intense.  Five women go caving in an unexplored system in North Carolina (actually played here by England) and bump into an incredible terror.

  • THE LOSERS

Based on a comic, and presented like one, this is a good thriller with a difference, because of the comic approach
  • THE BACK UP PLAN

JLo and Alex O’Loughlin in a rom-com that is uneven, and in places, just a little gross … but watchable!
  • OCEANS

Spectacular nature footage by the people who did March of the Penguins.
