  • THE BACK-UP PLAN

JLo and Alex O'Loughlin in a date movie about a woman’s biological clock ticking away
  • THE LOSERS

    / A low-budget A-Team in a big-effects action-adventure film.
  • 1. AVATAR:

Unless you have the ability to watch this in 3D on a huge home theatre screen, Avatar loses an awful lot on the small screen, but it’s still a compelling sci-fi film all things considered.  Transformers II was similar – loses a lot, but it’s a great action flick and worth the time.  The planet Pandora is the place, and indigenous people who are connected with nature in a unique way are being exploited by the bad people from earth who will destroy anything and everything for  profit.  Sam Worthington stars along with Zoe Saldana and Sigourney Weaver.  Good movie, shame it can’t be enjoyed the way it was meant to be seen!  Rated 14A.

  • 2. CRAZY HEART:

A Best Actor Oscar for Jeff Bridges, and a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Maggie Gyllenhaal make this an exceptional character study even if you don’t like country music.  Bridges is a celebrated country singer whose best days are behind him and who is now plagued by illness and alcoholism, playing one-night-stands in out-of-the-way bars with  pick-up bands.  Great original music, and fabulous writing. Rated 14A.

  • 3. THE YOUNG VICTORIA:

Emily Blunt is a dynamic, sassy, risk-taking Queen Victoria, showing a side of the stodgy monarch that most will not have seen.  Despite the fact that the script plays fast and loose with actual historic fact, especially in the climactic closing scene, much of the film is deadly accurate and is an excellent costume drama that Royal lovers will really appreciate.  Rated PG.

  • 4. CRAZY HEART:

While I love Avatar, this one plays better on the small screen and becomes even more intimate in this context.  Great role by Colin Farrell too – watch for it!

HANK WILLIAMS: THE SHOW HE NEVER GAVE (1981):

Sneezy Waters plays the country star here with a signature performance that country fans will love – despite the fact that Waters takes some liberties with the classic lyrics … made in Canada back in the day that not much was.

  • KICK ASS

A better film than the title suggests, with superhero-no-powers high-schoolers fighting for law and order.
  • DEATH AT A FUNERAL

Martin Lawrence and Chris Rock miss the mark desperately here
  • GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO

Great thriller with a very European look and feel (subtitled) that won’t work for everyone, but it worked for me!
