1. SHERLOCK HOLMES:
Robert Downy, Jr. is the sleuth made famous in the novels of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Judd Law is Dr. Watson. If you’re a Holmes purist, you may find this one something of a challenge in the beginning, as this Holmes has no deerstalker hat and no pipe. Instead he is a brawling, womanizing ne’er do well with all the charm of wolf in sheep’s clothing. Once you get into the swing of it thought, it’s great fun, a rollicking new look at one of the most famous detectives of all time. Rated PG.

2. ALVIN & THE CHIPMUNKS: THE SQUEAKQUL:
Unfortunately, the novelty has worn off, and this bookend to the first Alvin film just doesn’t get the job done. It’s cute enough for the kids, and the female chipmunk counterparts are great fun, but overall, for adults at least, it has that feeling of been-there-done-that. Voices of Justin Long and Anna Farris. Rated G.

3. AN EDUCATION:
This Oscar-nominated film (Carey Mulligan for Best Actress). It’s Britain in the ‘60s, and Jenny, a high school girl, meets David, an older man who introduces her to his world – sophisticated, suave, and very, very adult. Will Jenny go down the wrong path, destroying her potential and her future, or will she wake up and smell the coffee … which she still might be too young to drink? Rated PG.

4. SHERLOCK HOLMES:
Part of the sauciness of this Holmes lies at the feet of director Guy Ritchie who took liberties with the story, the characters, and the casting, but he got away with it. A thrill-ride as well as a whodunnit?

THE AFRICAN QUEEN (1951):
Just released on DVD this past week, this classic with Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn looks, in many places like it was shot on a back lot, but in fact, it was done largely in Africa. The reed-filled river scenes were shot in Turkey where Hepburn picked up dysentery from the water, and a parasite in her eyes that affected her all her life. An Oscar-winning role for Bogey.

A gross-out guy’s comedy with John Cusak that surprisingly has some good moments, but then … a lot of pretty bad ones too – the title says it all – back to the ‘80s
