for Feb 12 DVDs
  • SHUTTER ISLAND

Leo DiCaprio as a Federal agent on location in an isolated island insane asylum … where very strange things are happening
  • 1. LAW ABIDING CITIZEN:

Gerard Butler stars in one of the better revenge-action-adventure stories since Charles Bronson in “Death Wish.”  He is Clyde Shelton, exactly as described in the title until his wife and daughter are murdered in a home invasion.  The bad guys get reduced sentences on a plea bargain, and Shelton, a former undercover operative, goes to work to get even.  Written by Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium, Sphere, The Thomas Crown Affair), this one is a thrill-a-minute.  Rated 18A.

  • 2. COCO AVANT CHANEL:

One of two films in recent months on the fashionista’s life, this one places Audrey Tautou in the lead role.  The focus here is on Chanel’s formative years, but the story doesn’t really give us the insight we want to determine how she became what she was to be. The Shirley MacLaine version, Coco, is the better film. Rated PG.

  • 3. CABIN FEVER 2:

This one is a cheap direct-to-DVD sequel to what was a cheap theatrical release about a bunch of hormonally-driven teens who go camping at a cabin in the woods and are attacked by a strange and horrific virus.  In this version, one of them has survived and sets out to warn the world … but too late! Rated 14A.

  • 4. LAW ABIDING CITIZEN:

There is a significant amount of this film shot in a prison setting … and a real prison was used, with many of the extras actual hard-case convicts.

HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER (1973):

One of my favorite revenge movies, Clint Eastwood shows up in a small western town that killed its marshal … and he’s back, and looking for payback!  Watch for one of the headstones in the cemetery – “Sergio Leone.”

  • VALENTINE’S DAY

A pretty standard treatment of the love-and-lose-them theme, but a great cast including Julia Roberts
  • THE WOLFMAN/ PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS

A pretty standard treatment of the Wolfman legend complete with full moon and silver bullets – can only end one way
  • THE LIGHTNING THIEF

Good performance from young Logan Lerman as a teen descended from Greek gods
