God loses faith in mankind, the final angel falls, and it’s a battle for humanity – starring Paul Bettany and Lucas Black
TOOTH FAIRY
Dwayne Johnson is a tough athlete who becomes … the title character
EXTRAORDINARY MEASURES
Harrison Ford in a true-life medical drama
1. THE INVENTION OF LYING:
Ricky Gervais is the star here, and he also wrote the script and directed this story which takes place in the present time, but on an alternate-timeline earth where lying is unknown. Everyone tells the truth about everything all the time, which makes for interesting relationships – until Mark Bellison (Gervais) gets himself out of a jam by making up a story … that everyone believes, because lying is unknown. May offend the spiritual sensibilities of some when Mark gets into his God theories, but there are some very funny moments in thei quirky comedy. Rated PG
2. GAMER:
Gerard Butler stars in a thriller set in a near-future world where you don’t play action games – you ARE the action game. Gamers control other human beings who are wired into the gaming console and high action prevails … until your subject turns on you … and that’s just what happens when Kable (Butler) has had enough. A villainous role too, by Dexter’s Michael C. Hall. Rated 14A
3. PANDORUM:
The title of this sci-fi thriller is a happy coincidence, sounding like it’s related to Avatar’s “Pandora” but there is no connection. Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster star as a pair of astronauts who awaken from suspended animation with no memory of their mission, the details of their spacecraft, or what might of happened that leaves the vessel in the dark, with strange, creaking noises coming from down below. A better-than-average space opera! Rated 14A
4. PANDORUM:
It was originally slated to be a cheap, low-budget, direct-to-DVD feature with unknown actors until the script fell into the right hands and it became a studio production
EVENT HORIZON (1997):
Sticking with the theme of thrillers in deep space, this one stars Laurence Fishburne as a starship captain who learns that something is on his ship that doesn’t belong. Scary!
THE BOOK OF ELI
Denzel Washington is great in this post-apocalyptic road movie
THE SPY NEXT DOOR
Kid stuff with Jackie Chan in a domestic comedy with CIA overtones
THE LOVELY BONES
Spooky tale and excellent performance by Saoirse Ronan (Atonement) as a dead girl searching for her killer.
