1. UP:
Short title, big numbers at the box office for this family-friendly animated feature that offers the voice of Ed Asner as an old curmudgeon whose wife has died, and who decides to fulfill her last wish of going to the jungles of South America. Not enough money? Easy, just tie all kinds of helium balloons to your house, and float away … an unsuspecting boy scout is caught on the porch unbeknownst to the old man … but they have a great adventure together! Rated PG.
2. THE UGLY TRUTH:
Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl are the stars here in a mean-spirited film that is far too raunchy and way too mean to be considered a romantic comedy despite its billing. Heigl is a morning show producer at a TV station with flagging ratings, while Butler’s character is a male chauvinist pig with a cable access show in which he extols the virtues of unattached sex. Didn’t work for me! Rated 18A.
3. IN THE LOOP:
An intriguing story of the politics of war, sometimes played for laughs, and sometimes ironically realistic. The star here is James Gandolfini (Tony Soprano) with an entourage of political types from the UK and the US who are trying to stop a war that the may have inadvertently started on a TV interview. Confusing? The movie isn’t, but the concept is so high that you really have to be there. Rated 14A.

WAG THE DOG (1997):
This one plays even better today than it did a dozen years ago. Dustin Hoffman stars in a tale of manufactured news and a manufactured war in which all is not as it seems. |
