1. THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123:
A taut remake of the 1974 original that starred Walter Matthau. Here, Denzel Washington takes the lead as a transit supervisor talking with a subway highjacker in New York City. John Travolta is the heavy here with a train full of hostages. Several new twists were added by director Tony Scott, but it remains a solid kidnap drama. Rated 14A.
2. G.I. JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA:
A techno-thriller with Channing Tatum and Dennis Quaid. It plays out like a videogame with the elite GI Joe organization suited up in super-power fashion to fight the arch enemy Destro. More spfx than acting, it plays well to the videogame crowd, and I found it a pretty good ride – short on plot, long on action. Rated 14A.
3. ALIENS IN THE ATTIC:
There are kids in the world who have never seen Gremlins and similar shows … that’s the target audience for this silly little diversion. It is exactly as advertised … an invading force of little semi-Muppets tries to take over when it crashes into the attic of a family vacation home. They have a mind-ray to put people under their control … turns out it only works on adults. Harmless fun, but if you’re much over 13, it won’t work for you. Rated PG.

THE TAKING OF PELHAM 123 (1974):
An interesting original … Walter Matthau’s character wears clothing the exact reverse of that worn by Denzel Washington. Matthau’s character was named Zachary Garber. Washington’s is Walter Garber, a tribute to Matthau in the remake. |

- MICHAEL JACKSON’S THIS IS IT
- What a sensational documentary if you’re a Jackson fan. And if you’re not, it’s difficult to come away with anything but a sense of awe for his creativity, musicianship, and overall genius. Well done, and well worth the trip to the theatre.
