1. 12 ROUNDS:
Sounds like a boxing movie, but it’s not. WWE star John Cena is a New Orleans cop here, who, while pursuing a bad guy, witnesses the hoodlum’s girlfriend’s death as she is hit by a truck. The baddie holds the cop responsible, and when he gets the opportunity, kidnaps the nearest and dearest to him, and holds her hostage unless the cop can complete 12 nearly impossible tasks. It’s a hard-to-believe concept, but it actually plays out better than it sounds. Rated 14A.
2. THE CODE:
Never heard of this one? How about its other title, “Thick as Thieves?” Still nothing? Well, get this cast: Morgan Freeman, Antonio Banderas, directed by Mimi Leder of China Beach and ER. So, how does it miss theatres altogether and go straight to DVD? Well, how about this: it’s not a very good film! Freeman is a veteran criminal who recruits a young upstart (Banderas) to help pay a big debt to the Russian mob. It’s the opposite of the movie above – it sounds better than it plays! Rated 14A.
3. STONE OF DESTINY:
Directed by Charles Martin Smith (American Graffiti), this is a based-on-fact story of Scottish nationalism that sees four students break into Westminster Abby on Christmas Day, 1950, and steal the cherished “Stone of Destiny,” captured by Edward I in 1296 and has been the coronation stone for virtually every British monarch since … until that fateful Christmas Day. Interesting premise, good character study. Rated PG.

4. 12 ROUNDS:
A serviceable action-adventure yarn, directed by Renny Harlin (Cliffhanger, Die Hard 2).

THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION (1994):
Pay a visit to Morgan Freeman in better days. Stephen King wrote the story on which this is based – perhaps the best prison movie ever made. Not a big hit in theatres, it became one of the biggest-selling DVDs of all time. |
