  • DRAG ME
    TO HELL

A horror-thriller about a young female bank employee cursed by an irate customer.
  • UP

Disney Pixar animation about a grumpy old man who ties balloons to his house to escape the neighborhood
  • EASY VIRTUE

Roaring 20s backdrop for Colin Firth and Jessica Biel.
  • 1. NEW IN TOWN:

Rene Zelwegger and Harry Connick, Jr. star in this underrated film about an ice-queen corporate executive who is sent from the home office in the American south to freezing Minnesota to close down a food manufacturing plant.  Predictably, she finds friendship and romance, and ends up at odds with her corporate bosses.  Predictable, yes, but lots and lots of fun.  A solid romantic comedy that got short shrift in theatres. Rated PG.

  • 2. OUTLANDER:

Didn’t make it into most theatres, but still has a good cast headed by Jim Caviezel as a futuristic soldier from the stars who crash lands on earth during the time of the Vikings, along with a fire-breathing monster in the time of the Vikings.  Originally set to be shot in New Zealand with a larger budget, it ended up in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, but is a serviceable sci-fi thriller.  Rated 18A.

  • 3. THE COLOR OF FREEDOM:

Dennis Haysbert (The Unit), Joseph Fiennes, and Dianne Kruger star in a based-on-fact story of a white South African prison guard whose life is dramatically changed by the 20 years he spends assigned to one high-profile prisoner – Nelson Mandela.  Fiennes plays James Gregory, and the screenplay is based on is memoirs.  Rated 14A.

  • 4. NEW IN TOWN:

If you just want to have fun, and want a Devil-Wears-Prada kind of experience, this one will work for you.  Filmed in Winnipeg … in the winter!
MALCOLM X (1992):
Denzel Washington is superb as the title character in this biopic that is even more relevant today than it was 17 years ago.  Directed by Spike Lee, it was originally supposed to be Norman Jewison’s film, but protests over his colour resulted in a black director being hired.
  • TERMINATOR: SALVATION

A terrific action-adventure film but very dark and very bleak that brings us Christian Bale as John Connor … and Arnold?  Well, I’ll tell you!
  • NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN

Great fun once again with Ben Stiller, this time encountering all the usuals, plus Al Capone and Amelia Earhart.
