for April 3rd DVDs
  • ADVENTURELAND

In the summer of ’87 a college guy gets the worst summer job ever.
  • FAST AND FURIOUS

Vin Diesel and Paul Walker re-team to take car racing back to the streets where it all began with The Fast and The Furious in 2001.
  • 1. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE:

Dev Patel is the star here in the Oscar-winning film that is suffering just a little from all of its attention.  When it was playing in the little theatres with little notice, it was seen as an exceptional tale of life in the Mumbai slums … but now, with its Oscars and accolades, many catching up to it now are expecting more than it can deliver.  But it is an exceptional film!  Rated 14A.

  • 2. MARLY AND ME:

Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston star in this story of a couple, their badly-mannered dog, and their eventual children.  If you are old enough to remember “Old Yeller” consider yourself warned.  If not, just remember that most people live longer than most dogs … now, appropriately equipped, you can settle in.  Although billed as a family film, it has an edge to it that may not be appropriate for younger children.  Rated PG.

  • 3. SEVEN POUNDS:

Will Smith does not light up the screen here in this depressing tale of a man who may or may not work for the IRS, and who may or may not be out to help people.  The title refers to the Shakespearian term “... a pound of flesh”, meaning payback.  There are seven pounds of it here, and a more depressing movie I cannot recall.  Hard to recommend, even for big Will Smith fans. Rated 14A.

  • 4. RICK’S PICK:  SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE:

I loved this movie, and love the fact that the children who play the main characters as kids came right out of the same Mumbai slum that is the true star of this film about a young man one question and answer away from winning the Indian version of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire.”
SOUNDER (1972):
Now THIS is a dog movie … Paul Winfield and Cicely Tyson are superb in this story of sharecroppers in the ‘30s.  Sounder is the dog!.
  • 12 ROUNDS

Standard action flick with John Cena.
  • THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT

Very well done based-on-fact haunted house story.
  • MONSTERS VS ALIENS

Better in 3D than in 2D … some funny pop references and good lines, but at the end of the day … it’s kid stuff..
