  • 1 .BURN AFTER READING:

A quirky film from the Coen Brothers that will appeal to those who liked Fargo … set in Washington, D.C. it features an airhead performance by Brad Pitt as a personal trainer, and equally odd turn by Francis McDormand, and George Clooney as a philandering husband. The story revolves around a fired CIA operative who is writing his memoirs, which are mistaken for classified data – blackmail ensues, and most everyone comes out of this badly. Rated 14A

  • 2. MAMMA MIA:

: Based on the hit musical, Meryl Streep is Donna, one-time lead singer of a girl group, now preparing for her daughter’s marriage on a small, Greek Island where she has an inn. Who is the girl’s dad? That’s the point of it all as three possible dads show up. Pierce Brosnan sings, and it’s not pretty!! Great movie though for those who love the music of ABBA. Rated PG.

  • 3. THE MUMMY: TOMB OF THE DRAGON EMPEROR:

It looks as if director Rob Cohen just got a special effects kit for Christmas because the film is so overloaded with sword-fighting skeletons and terra-cotta warriors come-to-life that there isn’t much room for a story. Brendan Fraser is fine as Rick O’Connell, but Maria Bello is badly miscast as his wife. They’re too young to have the son that shows up, and none of the story really fits the previous movies. Barely acceptable. Rated PG.

  • RICK’S PICK: MAMMA MIA:

Just want to kick back and have a good time, sing your brains out, and forget your troubles? This one will do it!!

The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951):
Low-tech special effects, a fake robot, and stilted dialogue don’t hurt this movie classic, which is a great-to-see once you have made the trip to the theatre to see the remake. Michael Rennie stars.
  • The Day The Earth Stood Still

Very interesting remake of a classic that keeps the title and the robot Gort, but very little else in this update that sends a very good message to humanity – clean up or get out!
  • Frost Nixon

Outstanding portrayal, done documentary-style, of the 1977 interviews
  • Nothing Like The Holidays

A throwaway Christmas movie with a few funny moments thanks to John Leguizamo and Debra Messing.
